The Best Chocolate Cake

Well, Danielle is officially having a slumber party  in about a week and I'm going to do the cake.  I don't normally do the cakes, but I'm sort of into baking right now, so I think I'll give it a try.  If I had all the supplies I need, it would definitely be more economical, but I am going to spend some money on some decorating supplies.  Therefore, I need to figure out what cake to make.  I think I am going to try out a few cake recipes I can scrounge up, but she wants chocolate.  To date, the best chocolate cake recipe is Hershey's, located on the outside of every cocoa box they sell.  The batter is extremely thin, but it comes out beautifully.  Since I baked this for the first time I've done a lot of reading and I've learned that the thinner the batter, the higher the cake will rise.  I guess my concern there is will the cake be substantial enough to stand up to fondant?  I think so, but I'm going to look around for a day or so and unfrosted chocolate cake will be the snack of choice around here.

I think I baked it several times before I baked it for Darrin's birthday in October.  Since I let Danielle decorate that one in some basic blue and green buttercream, I wanted to keep the cake white and opted for a white chocolate frosting that I made out of white baking chips, butter, vanilla and a little milk.  Since Darrin was turning 17, the cake was just for us, since he is far too old for a party.  Emphasis was definitely on taste.  It was really good, but I think it would need some tweaking before I try it again.  After a couple of days the cake was holding up wonderfully but the frosting was so hard you had to microwave it a few seconds to really cut it without having the frosting "chip" off and leave little naked cake spots.  I've made it with the Perfectly Chocolate Frosting recipe also on the Hershey box and that is so easy and fantastic (recipe is also below).

I will see what I can come up with, but for the moment, here is the recipe for Hershey's Perfectly Chocolate Cake as found on the beloved cocoa box.  Please note that in all things baking, using butter is the best route to go and, unless specified otherwise, use unsalted butter for best results.
